Grebbel

Ingredients

  • Servings: 24
  • 1 cup heavy sweet cream or 1 cup sour cream
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda (if sour cream is used)
  • 4 eggs, seperated
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3 cups unsifted flour

Recipe

  • 1 beat egg yolks with sugar until lemon colored.
  • 2 beat whites in bowl.
  • 3 whip cream slightly.
  • 4 combine yolks, whites, and cream.
  • 5 sift flour with baking powder (and soda if used).
  • 6 mixed flour with creamed mixture.
  • 7 put dough on floured board and work in 1/2 cup flour.
  • 8 set aside in a covered bowl for 2 hours.
  • 9 roll dough to 1/4 inch thick.
  • 10 cut into strips about 3" x 5" and cut 2 slits in each strip.
  • 11 pull dough through slits.
  • 12 heat cooking oil, and fry on both sides until brown.
  • 13 remove and drain on paper towels.
  • 14 sprinkle with sugar or powder sugar.
