Kalacs (hungarian Sweet Bread)

Total Time: 5 hrs 15 mins Preparation Time: 4 hrs Cook Time: 1 hr 15 mins

Ingredients

  • 1 cup warm milk
  • 2 teaspoons yeast
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 10 cups flour
  • 4 eggs
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 3 1/2 cups milk
  • beaten egg

Recipe

  • 1 make a sponge dough from the 1 cup warm milk, 2 teaspoons dry yeast, 1 cup flour and 1 teaspoon sugar.
  • 2 work together with hands and let rise.
  • 3 mix in other ingredients and work until dough separates from hands and board.
  • 4 let dough rise again until double its size.
  • 5 place in two greased pans; brush top with beaten egg.
  • 6 place in a 350 degree fahrenheit oven for 1 hour and 15 minutes.
  • 7 after removing from oven, cover with damp towel and dry towel until cool. this will make a soft crust.
  • 8 makes 2 pans.
